Each module in this two-month program is designed to help you create a high-level data strategy based on insights from the faculty’s years of experience developing data strategies at dozens of organizations.

Introduction to Data Strategy

Apply a value creation framework with four perspectives to generate insights from data and learn to build data-driven products at scale to execute your data strategy.

Module 2:

Developing a Data Strategy

Learn a practical three-step methodology of contextualization, ideation, and prescription to develop a successful data strategy.

Module 3:

Data Management

Identify frameworks for data architecture, data storage, and data operations; assess the data life cycle; and explore the practical uses of three important categories of data: metadata, reference data, and master data.

Module 4:

Data Governance, Quality, and Security

Assess how data governance ensures that data stays reliable and secure; develop an effective approach to data security; and understand the best practices to comply with privacy regulations, such as GDPR, HIPAA and CCPA.

Module 5:

Data Processes and Technology

Organize data technologies into four categories: data generation and acquisition; data integration and management; data analysis; and data operationalization. Identify the technologies and applications for each step of your data process.

Module 6:

Data Organization and Culture

Gain a high-level view of how to build a culture to enable data-driven decision making in your organization; formally structure your organization to create value from your data; and evaluate the importance of roles such as chief data officer.

A veteran deep tech executive and recognized thought leader on Industrial IoT, Ballon brings more than 25 years of experience driving transformation at global technology companies. He is currently responsible for the overall digital technology strategy at Electric Last Mile Solutions. He was most recently VP & GM of Intel’s Internet of Things Group, where he pioneered AI and deep learning hardware and software solutions and oversaw a global, multi-billion-dollar P&L. Earlier, Ballon was Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Strategy Officer of GE Digital, GE’s global software and analytics group. At GE, he launched the company’s first cloud-based software and infrastructure platform, Predix, and scaled the organization to support GE’s multi-billion-dollar software & services business. Philip Kim is Chief Data and Analytics Officer of Public Storage, leading the analytics strategy that enables the use of data as a competitive advantage, leading a group of data scientists and data engineers that work on optimizing and developing algorithms to advance the business. He brings over 25 years of leadership and analytics experience and was most recently at Under Armour, where he established and led the global analytics function for six years. Previously, Mr. Kim served critical transformation roles in companies that include Amazon, Alcatel Lucent, and General Electric. During his tenures, he established global teams that built and delivered analytic capabilities to grow revenue, optimize operational efficiency, and expand profit margins. Mr. Kim holds MBAs from Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Wright State University.

Karthik Suri

Chief Digital Officer, Invitae

Karthik leads Invitae’s Data and Digital platform strategy, delivery, GTM, security, and operations. He also has responsibilities in Information Security and Information Technology to drive cyber security and productivity across the organization. Previously, Karthik served as chief operating officer at GE Digital and COO for GE’s Industrial IOT & Data Platform. In addition, he has held leadership roles in platform technology companies including PayPal, eBay, Magento, Yahoo!, and Barclays following his early career at GE. In addition, Karthik serves on the Steering Committee of the World Economic Forum’s Digital Platform & Ecosystems group and also on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Northern California. He holds a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's in Chemistry from BITS, Pilani, India; a Master's in Industrial & Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University; and a dual MBA from Columbia Business School and University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business.

Chief Strategy Officer & Chairman, ZyLab; Professor in Text-Mining and AI, Maastricht University

Johannes Scholtes holds the extraordinary Chair in Text Mining from the Department of Data Science at the Department of Science and Engineering of the University of Maastricht. From 1987 Scholtes has been at ZyLAB, starting as President & CEO and since 2009 as Chairman and leader of the Data Science team. He has been involved in deploying in-house e-discovery software with organizations such as the UN War Crimes Tribunals, the FBI-ENRON investigations, the EOP (White House), European Commission DG OLAF (anti-fraud), Akzo-Nobel, ING Bank, and many other organizations worldwide. Earlier, Scholtes was lieutenant in the intelligence department of the Royal Dutch Navy. Scholtes holds a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from Delft University of Technology and a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics from the University of Amsterdam. He holds 9 patents in text-mining and machine learning.

Sham Chotai

Chief Digital Officer, New Context

In a career that spans over 25 years, Sham is a seasoned entrepreneur and innovator who is passionate about bringing technology solutions to market that deliver tangible outcomes. Alongside his role with New Context to construct and execute Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 strategies, Sham advises large and small firms on digital transformation driven by big data, analytics, and AI. Previously, Sham served as Barrick’s Chief Digital Officer—a role designed to drive forward the mining company's transformation into a digital enterprise. Sham joined Barrick from GE, where he served as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Software for the company’s Power & Water and Transportation divisions. Prior to GE, he was Vice President of Cloud Computing for Hewlett-Packard. Mr. Chotai also led the development of a patented predictive analytics platform for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries at DecisionView Software, a company he co-founded.

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, HackerStrike

Ralph Aceves is the Co-Founder and CEO at HackerStrike, leading the development of an AI-based technology to stop ransomware and provide autonomous self-healing across all devices on the network. Prior to HackerStrike, he was the Founder and CEO at Ovalpath Corporation, where he developed a mobile workforce management system to increase field staff efficiency. The company was acquired by Curtiss-Wright Corporation in 2013. Previously, Ralph was the President and CEO at Vianeta Communications, Chief Operating Officer at Levient Corporation, Vice President of World Wide Operations and CIO at Informatica, and Vice President of Financial Operations at Addison-Wesley. Ralph holds an MBA from Golden Gate University, and a BSc from San Jose State University.

Matthew Howard

Managing Partner, Norwest Venture Partners

Matt brings over 30 years of experience in marketing, product management, engineering, business development, and sales in a wide range of technologies to Norwest Venture Partners. He focuses his efforts on mobile, security, rich media, cloud-based services/applications, and infrastructure-related sectors, and has appeared on the Forbes Midas List as a top 100 investor for three years and was recently recognized by Business Insider as one of the “19 Best Enterprise Tech Venture Capitalists.” He was also featured on AlwaysOn’s list of “Power Players in the Cloud.” Previously, Matt was an early employee of Cisco, where he established Cisco’s security and VPN strategy, situated Cisco as the leading firewall appliance manufacturer, and launched the first load-balancing product. In addition, Matt has held various positions at Vertical Communications, Digital Equipment Corporation, BDM International, and Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) Communications Corporation.
