Program Overview

The Berkeley Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) Program is a 13-month learning journey (including a two-month program break) into the world of business analytics, covering foundations necessary to lead analytics teams and drive strategic decision making. The program is led by esteemed Berkeley faculty who combine cutting-edge research with extensive industry experience. The comprehensive curriculum begins with three core modules that provide you with the foundational frameworks to build and lead a business analytics team. You will gain hands-on experience on effectively using tools that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to drive strategy and innovation across your organization. Following the core modules, you will choose one elective short course and engage in one required short course to further enhance your technical, analytical, and leadership skills. You will also apply program insights to a capstone project by devising a data strategy road map for your organization.

Curriculum

The Berkeley CAO Program delivers learning that will enable you to leverage data and analytics to drive strategy and innovation across your organization. You will learn through lectures from expert faculty and industry specialists, case studies, discussions, and group and individual exercises. The foundational curriculum includes three core modules encompassing data-based decision making, forecasting trends, and the use of AI and ML for gaining business insights. Throughout the core modules, you will work on a capstone project in which you will apply program insights to real-world business challenges. This is followed by two asynchronous short courses (one elective and one required) that will be in line with your career goals. The program concludes with a three-day networking event on the Berkeley campus in California. It is an extraordinary opportunity to meet your cohort peers, industry experts, and faculty to build a global network that will last a lifetime.

  • Learn to make sense of and harness new technologies and technology trends to, design effective technology strategies and identify solutions to transform your business.

Capstone Strategy Project

Across the core modules, participants will apply classroom lessons to a capstone project that evolves throughout the program. You will be organized in groups or can work individually on an opportunity or problem in which you are interested.

The project asks you to take the next steps in leveraging data to drive business objectives of your organization. Group coaching sessions will be led by an industry expert serving in a learning facilitator role. Participants submit a presentation that covers the following:

  • Summarize the opportunity
  • Submit data inventory
  • List prioritization criteria for the opportunity. Include data alignment, cultural alignment, and success metrics
  • Use experimental techniques to test your analytics strategy
  • Assess the strategy implementation and propose next steps
  • Selected projects will be featured during a showcase with faculty

Participant Profile

This program is ideal for senior managers and leaders who aim to leverage analytics in their decision-making processes and build data analytics teams in their organizations.

Participants are required to have:

  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

Please note that the program focuses on foundations and foundational frameworks in business analytics. While some background in statistics and math will be necessary, the program may be elementary-level for someone possessing an appropriate graduate degree.

Shachar Kariv

Benjamin N. Ward Professor of Economics, Haas School of Business

Shachar Kariv is the Benjamin N. Ward Professor of Economics and former department chairperson and faculty director of Berkeley's Experimental Social Science Laboratory (XLab). Kariv is also the co-founder and chief scientist of Capital Preferences, where he applies his research on individual saving, investment, and insurance choices to help clients make better decisions about how to design and market products and services and improve customer acquisition, relationship, and retention.

Steve Tadelis

Professor of Economics | Sarin Chair in Strategy and Leadership, Haas School of Business

Steve Tadelis is a professor of economics and Sarin Chair in Leadership and Strategy at Berkeley Haas. Tadelis was a senior director and distinguished economist at eBay Research Labs (2011 to 2013) and vice president of economics and market design at Amazon (2016 to 2017) where he applied economics research tools to a variety of product and business applications, working with technologists, machine learning scientists, and business leaders. He continues to advise Amazon part-time as an economist fellow.
